From Proto-Albanian *j́u̯anʉh, from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰwonos. Compare Messapic den (voice) Serbo-Croatian zvono (bell), Armenian ձայն (jayn, voice).[1]

From Old Albanian zan, from Proto-Albanian *džeina, from Proto-Indo-European *gʰendʰ- (compare English begin, Ancient Greek χανδάνω (khandánō, to hold, contain), Sanskrit ज्या (jyā́, force, power), जयति (jáyati, to win, conquer)).[2]

Etymology 3

From Proto-Indo-European *gʷʰe or *ǵʰu̯e. Possibly related to zemër (heart), with zemër being analyzed as zem-ërë, meaning "the beating one".[3] The term is exclusively found in Arbëresh and is used in the forms zëe and zëje.
