Etymology

Inherited from Latin pavīmentum (floor composed of small stones beaten down), possibly through attested Vulgar Latin paumentum.[1] Compare Italian pavimento, Aromanian pimintu, Logudorese Sardinian pamentu (floor), pomentu, Friulian palment. Doublet of paviment.
