From Proto-Albanian *en-gaska; variant ngaj from a slightly different root (see ngaj), from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰeh₁- (leave). Compare English go, Ancient Greek κιχάνω (kikhánō, to meet with, arrive at), Sanskrit जहाति (jáhāti, to renounce), Avestan 𐬰𐬀𐬰𐬁𐬨𐬌 (zazāmi).
