Possibly from Proto-Slavic *kopylъ (shoot, sprout; bastard), from *kopàti (to dig, cultivate); compare Ukrainian копил (kopyl) or копиля (kopylja), Bulgarian ко́пеле (kópele). Alternatively ultimately an old paleo-Balkan substrate word; compare Romanian copil, Aromanian cochil, Albanian kopil, Byzantine Greek κόπελος (kópelos).
