From Sumerian 𒌋 (giguru), from 𒄀 (gi, reed) +‎ 𒄥 (gur, to turn) +‎ 𒀀 (a, nominalizing suffix), literally reed stylus turned around, indicating the antecedent of the sign 𒌋, a circular hole made with the butt end of the stylus.
