Likely from a Pama-Nyungan language. Said to be from a language spoken in the Rockhampton area in Queensland,[1] but this cannot be confirmed.[2]

  1. A diadromous fish of species Lates calcarifer, of the Centropomidae family, order Perciformes, widely distributed in the Indo-West Pacific; a popular food fish.

  3. (Australia, obsolete) The fish Neoceratodus forsteri of the family Neoceratodontidae; the Australian lungfish.
