Unadapted borrowing from French aubergine, from Catalan albergínia, from Arabic اَلْبَاذِنْجَان (al-bāḏinjān, the aubergine), from Persian بادنجان (bâdenjân), from باتنجان (bâtenjân), from Sanskrit वातिगगम (vātigagama, the plant that cures the wind), cognate with Malayalam വഴുതന (vaḻutana). Doublet of brinjal.
