From Latin ante (preposition and prefix); akin to Ancient Greek ἀντί (antí), Sanskrit अन्ति (anti), Gothic 𐌰𐌽𐌳- (and-), 𐌰𐌽𐌳𐌰- (anda-) (only in compounds), 𐌰𐌽𐌳- (and-), 𐍉𐌽𐌳- (ōnd-), (only in compounds): compare answer, along, German ant-, ent- (in compounds). Doublet of and- and anti-.
