From Middle High German toufe, from Old High German toufī, from Proto-West Germanic *daupīni (dipping, immersion).

Upper German form with lack of umlaut before a labial; reinforced probably by the fact that the Central German variants clashed with Teufe, older form of Tiefe (depth).
