From Middle High German tanne, from Old High German tanna, from Proto-West Germanic *dannā, from Proto-Germanic *dannǭ, perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *(s)dʰonu (fir). Per this hypothesis, related to Hittite 𒄑𒋫𒈾𒀀𒌑 (GIŠta-na-a-ú /⁠tanau⁠/, fir), Breton tann (sessile oak), Avestan 𐬚𐬀𐬥𐬎𐬎𐬀𐬭𐬆 (θanuuarə, bow), Sanskrit धनु (dhánu), perhaps Latin femur (thigh).
