An idiom means something. The entry here is more of a malapropism, a joke. I do not consider it funny, but some people are easily amused. If anything irreverent is said about the pope or their particular favorite bugbear, then they laugh it up. There is a difference between the words idiom and joke. This entry is just one of the many off topic entries that lower the perceived quality of Wiktionary. Fartherred 00:50, 22 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The implication with "Is the pope Catholic?" and with "Does a bear shit in the woods?" is that the answer to the original question is as obviously yes as is the answer to the question offered in response. If "Does the pope shit in the woods?" is to be understood as an idiom, its meaning should be given as: The answer to your question is no. Fartherred 01:09, 22 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Whether or not the expression logically makes sense, when it is used, it is used to mean "obviously" (http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Does%20the%20Pope%20shit%20in%20the%20woods%3F note the amount of upvotes). Telling people that it is "meaningless irreverent humour" makes it really quite useless as an entry — plus, if "meaningless" is to be accepted as a definition on Wiktionary, surely we must create pages and definitions for all conceivable nonsense terms. I think that the definition should be left as it was originally, and you can request the page's deletion if you object to it, rather than altering it into an unhelpful form. 86.158.216.229 18:40, 10 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Not sure if it's attested though it is probably false. Similarly (deprecated template usage) are bears Catholic is probably false - the difference being that bears have never been Catholic. SemperBlotto (talk) 18:50, 10 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
