Presumably the expression re [wanting to be] 'ahead of the curve' derives from some analogy?
Is it a surfing one, or does it have some other background?
Why is it deemed better to be ahead of the curve than, say, on or behind it?

- It seems to be drawing on sports. I not particularly knowledgeable, but surfing doesn't seem quite right - one is riding inside the curl or with the curve. I am thinking of American baseball, when the batter is anticipating a curve ball, perhaps hitting the ball before it curves out of reach?
