I'm not sure that it would necessarily be considered "derogatory", it's more a tongue-in-cheek, good humored, ribbing.

Admittedly, I have nothing to back this up besides personal experience - but I was an 11B for 8 years, and I can't recall it ever being used in harsh or disparaging contexts.
