From Middle Low German Swêde, from a Germanic word akin to Old Norse Svíþjóð, Old English Swēoþēod (Sweden, literally Swede nation), itself from Swēo (Swede), from Proto-Germanic *swihô (Swede). Cognate with Dutch Zweed, German Schwede.
