Etymology 1

First attested in the Worin seokbo (月印釋譜 / 월인석보), 1459, as Middle Korean 버히〮다〮 (Yale: pèh-í-tá), originally a causative of the verb 벟다〮 (pèh-tá, to be cut, intransitive). The word has become monomorphemic, as the source verb is now obsolete.
