  1. (archaic) Alternative form of मक्खन (makkhan, butter)
    • c. 1500, Surdas, Sursagar :
      सूनैं भवन कहूँ कॊउ नाहीं, मनु याही कौ राज ।
      भाँड़े धरत उधारत मूँदत, दधि माखन कैं काज ॥
      sūna͠i bhavan kahū̃ kǒu nāhī̃, manu yāhī kau rāj .
      bhā̃ṛe dharat udhārat mū̃dat, dadhi mākhan ka͠i kāj .
      • Translation by Rupert Snell
        An empty house, no-one about — as though it were his own realm;
        taking the pots, opening, closing … looking for butter and curd!
