From Proto-Turkic *k(i)aya (cliff).

Cognate with Old Uyghur [script needed] (qaya, rock, cliff);[1] Uzbek qoya (rock, cliff), Turkmen gaýa (rock, cliff), Azerbaijani qaya (rock), Khakas хая (xaya, rock), Tuvan хая (xaya, rock), Yakut хайа (qaya, mountain).
